Welcome to Wilmington, my hometown and favorite place in the world!
When people say the "Wilmington area" what it usually means is anywhere from Pender County (which is made up of Topsail Beach ~ Surf City ~ Sneads Ferry ~ Hampstead ~ Rocky Point ~ Scotts Hills) which is just North of the actual city limits of Wilmington and then all the way South to Brunswick County (with popular areas and townships like Leland ~ Belville ~ Southport ~ Brunswick Forest ~ Bolivia ~ Boiling Springs).
The city of Wilmington is actually located in New Hanover County which is the smallest county in North Carolina, but one of the most thriving per capita. Wilmington of course has its popular areas in the city limits like the Historic Riverfront area, Landfall Country Club, Mayfaire, Pine Valley, Medical District and more. But, some of my personal favorite areas of New Hanover County is Wrightsville Beach, Ogden, Middle Sound, Porters Neck, Castle Hayne, Monkey Junction, Carolina Beach of Kure Beach. These areas, just out of the city limits (and city taxes) have become more and more popular, especially the entire Ogden, Middle Sound and Porters Neck areas.
